about

About the song, “You Are Clearly The Reason Why” from songwriters, Jon Scanlon and Matt Hajdys:

Matt: The idea of this song from a musical standpoint was to blend a few genres into one song. In the verses we tried to create a Johnny Marr, Peter Buck, Robert Buck, jangle guitar vibe. The pre-chorus features more of a soundscape like The Cure, Portishead, or Smashing Pumpkins. Then the chorus jumps to a Weezer, Superdrag, Jimmy Eat World, 8th note power chord rock feel. The end concludes in a reprise of the "Hack Therapist" chorus with musical influences from Sunny Day Real Estate, Tegan & Sara, Pearl Jam, & Sia. We honestly could never touch any of the aforementioned artists' writing skills but...We tried.

Jon: “The original idea for the lyrics was an attempt to approach the end of something important, whether a relationship or a job or any kind of personal epoch, with a sort of wry tone that suggested a sarcastic attitude towards that end,” said lead vocalist Jonathan Scanlon. “I think we all know that this industry will never be the same after the pandemic, and I’d like to think we’re all at the point where we have to approach it with a bit of humor to survive it. Combined with the images of a sort of “bygone era” we think the words really reflect how a lot of us are feeling about the future of our scene, but with a snarky willingness to move forward and start over, to rebuild it better than it was before.”

lyrics

I prefer to be left alone
But here you are in front of me
I should’ve known that you were near
I could hear your spiritless symphony
I know mine sounds no better
But there’s hope for it yet
It’s the easiest way to forget
And to pretend I am anywhere but here

Now every time that you are by my side
I get the overwhelming urge to turn
And run away, I feel no shame in saying
If it’s a crime, the laws that I’ve defied
Bail denied and sent away for life, and
Nothing less, the message I’m conveying
Is it’s best if we left with respect intact
Better if we said goodbye
You are clearly the reason why
I’ll end up in therapy

I would choose to be on my own
If you’re my one alternative
I know that tone and now I think
I need a drink or a sedative
I know there’s no blue ribbon
Pinned upon my lapel
There’s no motivation in hell
Every sentiment insincere

Now every time that you are by my side
I get the overwhelming urge to turn
And run away, I feel no shame in saying
If it’s a crime, the laws that I’ve defied
Bail denied and sent away for life, and
Nothing less, the message I’m conveying
Is it’s best if we left with respect intact
Better if we said goodbye
You are clearly the reason why
I’ll end up in therapy
Best if we left with respect intact
Better if we said goodbye
You are clearly the reason why
I’ll end up in therapy

I know mine may seem no better
But I’ve been trying again
And when I start dying again
And when the doubts bring
Their whispers back to my ears
I will ask myself

Is it right to just concede
To never feeling content?
Like, maybe just surviving
Is a great accomplishment
Is it good to just accept
That this is all that will be?
Like, maybe I should bail
On all the stale hypocrisy

Oh, I don’t know
